Pakistan’s unlucky millions practice for another flood stream, India finally stepped up to the table. Foreign minister S M Krishna called up his complement Shah Mahmood Qureshi on Friday to propose aid of $5 million for the flood thump in Pakistan.

Krishna described the offer as a “gesture of solidarity with the people of Pakistan in their hour of need”, a statement issued by the Indian High Commission here said Friday.
Sources in the Pakistan foreign ministry said India’s offer was being considered.
“We have not rejected the offer outright and a decision would be made soon,” a senior official said.

India’s offer of aid has taken its time, and comes after UN secretary general Ban-ki Moon put out a global request for over $450 million in flood relief for Pakistan.

During Pakistan’s gigantic earthquake in October 2005, India sent three consignments of relief material like blankets, medicines etc. For the first time ever, Indian Air Force planes landed in Islamabad to distribute relief material.

India seeks access to telecom operators by late August the encrypted BlackBerry failing to block two multimedia telephone services due to safety concerns, the government said Thursday in a statement.

Following a meeting between the Indian Secretary of the Interior, GK Pillai, representatives of security agencies and the Department of Telecom, the government requested that two BlackBerry services are available to intelligence agencies by the August 31.

“If a technical solution is not made by August 31, the Government will reconsider its position and take steps to block these two services network,” the statement said.

Both services are concerned instant messaging services and emails. In India, the operators who provide BlackBerry services have a legal responsibility to provide intelligence services to have access to all telephony services.

No comment from the Canadian manufacturer of BlackBerry, Research In Motion (RIM), was immediately available. A source at the Interior Ministry had said shortly before the AFP Thursday that the meeting had ended “without result”.

“No decision has been taken and we will soon have further discussions”, said the source on condition of anonymity. Officials at the Interior Ministry said that India could set a deadline to RIM for access to encrypted data, indicating that no official of the manufacturer was present at the meeting, described as “internal”.

Only the public operator BSNL participated.

But a senior RIM, Robert Crow, in charge of relations with government authorities, said he made a tour of “courtesy” to the Minister of Interior, P. Chidambaram. India, which currently has one million users of BlackBerry, RIM is one of the most promising.

The government had previously warned that it could allow operators to provide telephony services only may be intercepted by intelligence agencies. A suspension of encrypted services allow BlackBerry users the ability to phone and surf the Internet.

India, plagued by separatist violence in Kashmir (Pakistan border) and a Maoist rebellion in many states, is extremely sensitive about the potential risks related to technology. The government fears that the new means of communication are used by insurgent groups.

In November 2008, a commando armed had used mobile phones and satellites to coordinate attacks in Mumbai which had 166 deaths. For its part, Saudi Arabia said Tuesday the maintenance of the BlackBerry messaging service and further discussion on the regulatory framework to enable it to monitor the content of discussions on this very secure multimedia phone.

Fears are growing about epidemics of disease among up to 2.5 million people affected by floods in Pakistan that have killed up to 1,500 people in the northwest.

Officials cautioned that a lack of drinking water is spreading disease, including cholera. The health minister,  Syed Zahir Ali Shah in the  province, said about 100,000 people, mostly children, were suffer from illnesses such as gastroenteritis.

In Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Shoaib Mohammad, a doctor at -bed mobile clinic said he had received patients with trauma, gastroenteritis, skin diseases and dehydration.

Katy Attfield, the head of disaster management at the British Red Cross, said providing clean water was one of the priorities in the relief efforts.

The United Nations said 980,000 people had been displaced and that the number would be increase over a million when the assessments were made in all affected districts.

“A rapid assessment carried out by the UN World Food Programme in four districts – Nowshera, Charsadda, Mardan and Peshawar – puts the figure of people who have lost their homes or are temporarily displaced at nearly 980,000,” the UN Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs said.

Survivors have blamed the government of failing to grant adequate shelter, food and medicine in the aftermath of the disaster.

Hundreds also gathered in Peshawar to protest against the government’s slow response.

SEOUL – South Korea’s navy has staged anti-submarine drills among fresh tension with North Korea.

It includes about ten warships as well as a 3,000 ton destructive force and three patrol boats took part in the one-day drill.

Military officials of South Korea’s navy said the exercise involved the testing of anti-submarine depth charges and naval guns.

The drill was apprehended in the west coast town of Taean and tracks the sinking of a South Korean warship in March.

The investigators team, including experts from the US and Sweden, blamed the North of firing a torpedo that sank the warship, and killing 46 sailors in past.

On Monday 31^st May 2010, the South Korea announced a series of military, diplomatic and economic measures together with a trade cut-off to punish the North.

North Korea also plans to restart cross-border loudspeaker propaganda broadcasts, which were stooped six years ago.

Though, the North has exposed to lock the last road link with the South if the broadcasts resume. They also stated that US and South Korea will soon hold a joint anti-submarine exercise.

South Korean military said today that it is crumbing an agreement intended at preventing accidental armed clashes with the South Korea.

I had been banned from Facebook and my account had been disabled a night before Facebook was banned in Pakistan. Before all this happened, I visited the blasphemous page “Draw Muhammad Day” and the content on the page hurt me badly.

Once again a certain group of westerners called it the “freedom of expression” and went on to show extremism – something they always verbally disassociate themselves from.

As a response to this lunacy, I thought it best to find out how they respond to others’ right of freedom of expression – I created an Adolph Hitler page right away and it read, “To all those who think they can ridicule Islam in the name of freedom of expression and yet punish those who speak of the genius of Hitler”.
The comment on the wall read, “Let’s hit them where it hurts them the most”. Further I added some photos of the Fuhrer, Nazi Party and the Italian Footballer Paolo Di Canio who was banned and fined by FIFA two years ago for performing the “controversial” Roman Salute which according to him gave him a sense of belonging to his people.

Within an hour tens of people joined the Hitler page which was named “H | T L E R”. The very next time I tried to log in I found out that my profile had been disabled for ‘violation of Facebook Regulations’.

Facebook’s reply for my inquiry was as following (also shown in above screenshot):

Now how is it that Hitler is termed as the most evil person in the history of mankind while those that bomb Muslims, commit heinous crimes in their countries, ridicule their Prophet and Quran and as a result hurt the sentiments of 1.2 billion Muslims are hailed as heroes? And I wonder why the victims of Holocaust are more important than victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Despite the protest of a large number of Muslims and Boycott Facebook, Facebook has not removed the blasphemous page from the website. According the statement issued by Facebook their policy is to withhold such content in countries where it is controversial. The statement specifically says that we do not remove Nazi content from Facebook because it is illegal only in a few countries. As two-faced statements go, this one takes the prize. Perhaps before issuing the statement the Facebook did not realise that words like “Adolf Hitler”, “Sieg Heil” and “Nazi” are not allowed to be used on Facebook to create new pages.

And if all this and the removal of Hitler page and the permanent deactivation of my profile isn’t enough, here is a testament to Facebook’s vile hypocrisy. The statement issued by Facebook on 20 May says, “We strongly believe that Facebook users have the freedom to express their opinions, and we don’t typically take down content, groups or pages that speak out against countries, religions, political entities, or ideas.”

While, in another instance, Facebook replied me in entirely different way. Excerpt and screenshot is given above.

Now these two conflicting statements speak volumes about the discrimination by the Facebook. It simply means that Facebook through its official statement to global media wants the world to believe that they are the torchbearers of freedom of expression and allow everyone to speak their minds out. On the other hand the face that individuals like me get to see is a much horrible one. It talks about hate and intolerance and all forms of so-called equality and unshakable resolve. While Facebook is portraying itself as the silent and innocent onlooker for the entire world, I wonder what gives them the right to remove a major chunk of my life from the web.

I don’t think Facebook should come up with any clarification statements for the Muslim world over what happened. It is clearer than crystal that as long as we are labelled as extremists, we are not going to enjoy the equal rights in this world. And those that are trying to play God love to label us that. While reporting the Facebook ban in Pakistan in different articles, guardian.co.uk mentions the brutality of Pakistan Army in Swat while Yahoo thinks it’s necessary to unveil Al-Qaida’s plans of attacks on Danish and Dutch football teams. It is a blatant attempt to criticize Pakistan for placing the ban, link the country to extremism and terrorism and thereby justifying this sacrilegious act of Facebook users.

What Quran-e-Majeed Says about Munafiqeen:

Second Ruku of Surah Al-Baqrah exclusively deals with Munafiqeen! It should be noted that the Objective of creation of man, infallibility of Quran-e-Majeed, and characteristics of people who will benefit from Quran and who won’t are given in third Ruku and man’s status as Khalifa or Governor on earth is described I 4th ruku along with the immense importance of knowledge and learning but the characteristics of Munafiqeen are described in 2nd Ruku. Briefly there two types of Munafiqeen; those who had reached at point of no return with closure of their eyes, ears and hearts and those who are half Munfiq i.e. those who follow the easy things of Islam but are hesitant to obey more difficult injunctions e.g. giving up interest etc. The features of die hard Munafqeen who will stay in hell forever include: Their attempt to deceive Allah and Mo’min, Their arrogance, their spread of all sorts of corruption, their belittling others, illness in their hearts which Allah has magnified many times!

Indian Maritime Doctrine was formally announced in April-2004. However, the year-2006 ‘Navy Day’ is considered to be as the day, once Indian Navy actually started, “transforming itself from a ‘brown water’ coastal defense force to a formidable ‘blue water’ fleet.” Blue water navy has indeed two connotations: the technical and the political. Technically, a naval force having the capability to operate 200 nautical miles (320 km) from its sea shore into the deep sea on the longer ranges can be graded as the blue water navy. However, politically, it is the long range extension of the state’s presence, as the former Indian Navy Chief of Staff, Admiral Jayant Nadkarni once said that,  “legitimate use…of a Blue Water navy is power projection which is necessary” for a “power like India.”

Indeed, India started expanding its naval fleet in early 1990s after conceiving the concept of blue water navy. Since 1998, India is regularly improving its naval doctrine. In 1998, Indian Navy issued; “The Maritime Dimension-A Naval Vision.” This document set the mission for Indian Navy as, a force capable to operate in the open seas. In April 2004, a formal Indian Maritime Doctrine of 148 pages was proclaimed. The doctrine clearly lay dawn the future strategic vision of the Indian Navy with the subtitle as; The Maritime Dimension-A Naval Vision. Through the Vision Statement, Indian Navy gave a Roadmap to Transformation in October 2006. In 2007, with the mission to ‘Freedom to Use the Seas’: India’s Maritime Military Strategy (IMMS) was issued. Since 1998, an Indian maritime vision has the dedicated support including the enhanced budget allocation from the successive governments; initially the NDA Government under BJP and later the Congress lead UPA Government.

Indeed, the Indian Maritime Doctrine-2004 has been formulated on the basis of strategic concept given by US Navy Admiral Mahan, to the United States President Roosevelt for the domination of oceans especially the Pacific Ocean to gain the status of a major power. Admiral Mahan had a vision that domination of Pacific would give US an edge over the other states geopolitically as well as geo-economically. According to Mahan, “the convergence there of so many ships…will constitute a centre of commerce, inter-oceanic encounters between states. It was one whose approaches will be watched jealously, and whose relations to the other centres of the Pacific by the (maritime) lines joining it to them must be examined carefully.”

In the historical perspective, what Admiral Mahan had visualized for US Navy in the Pacific towards the end of 19th century, Indian Navy desires to achieve through the domination of Indian Ocean and surrounding waters by the end of first quarter of 21st century. India in fact desires the Indian Ocean to become ‘India Ocean’ and the way US entered the club of global powers in the beginning of the 20th century; India does the same in 21st century. Otherwise India considered the Indian Ocean as the part of its extended neighbourhood, where Indian Navy will safeguard its “diplomatic, security and economic interests”.

Salient features of the Indian Maritime Doctrine-2004 include, controlling the choke points, significant islands and trade routes in the Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea and in the Bay of Bengal.  The doctrine further lays down limits of the vision for the Indian Navy for the first quarter of 21st century as to; “look at the arc from the Persian Gulf to the Straits of Malacca as a legitimate area of interest.”  The doctrine also highlighted the Indian Navy as the “three-dimensional blue water force”, having the potential to undertake significant assignments and roles “on the surface, underwater, and in the air.” During the peace time, Indian navy will have to undertake the naval diplomatic assignments for the promotion of its cause. However, the proactive role of the Indian Navy would be the projection of its power beyond the limits of Indian shores. It has to counter the “distant emerging threats and protect extended ‘Sea Lines of Communication’ through and from the Indian Ocean.”

In the regional perspective, as perceived Indian Navy has to operate against the navies of Pakistan and China. The doctrine however, “calls for a stronger deterrent capability against foreign intervention by non-littoral navies, not limited to China and Pakistan only. This strategic reach indeed call for procurement of more sophisticated diesel and nuclear capable submarines, establishing aircraft carrier and developing new cruise missiles. Indian Navy, currently operating in area of over 3.5 million square kilometres (extending from the Arabian Sea through Indian Ocean to the Bay of Bengal) is being modernized through the procurement of modern submarines, frigates and other naval vessels in collaboration with its Western allies, US, Israel and Russia.

With respect to the strategic designs of the Indian Navy, as ‘Oceanic Navy’, it has assumed for itself, “the primary responsibility lying on the Indian Navy to guard the steel ring created by Singapore, Ceylon, Mauritius and Socotra…the Indian Ocean must therefore remain truly Indian.” With this strategic thought, the Indian Navy Vision Statement (2006), clearly laid down the role for Indian Navy as, “of safeguarding our maritime interests on the high seas and projecting combat power across (and around) the (Indian Ocean) littoral.” Covering these wide ranging naval interests of India, Indian Premier Dr. Manmohan Singh said that, “our strategic footprint covers…to the far reaches of the Indian Ocean. Awareness of this reality should inform and animate our strategic thinking and defence planning.”

In order to meet its energy needs and for its burgeoning economic drive as a great power status, securing the extended sea lines of communication from the Gulf to Southeast Asia is essential for the Indian Navy. In the wording of former Indian Naval Chief, Admiral Sureesh Mehta; “we are not only looking at countering threats but to protect the country’s economic and energy interests. This task has extended our area of operations. This might necessitate our operating in distant waters. As the Indian economy grows, the country is making increasing investments in distant places to ensure the availability of energy flow to maintain this growth. This is gradually defining what may be called our secondary area of maritime interest.”

Through yet another revised Maritime Doctrine of 2009, Indian Navy has made major changes in its 2004 doctrine. Indian Navy has revamped its existing policies to factor in maritime terrorism, piracy and coastal security as the matter of great strategic significance. The strategic designs of India as the blue water navy, capable to operate in the open seas, to pursue and safeguard Indian oceanic interests raise the question of “how far India has got the naval capability, the capacity, to match such strategic intentions”.
